Sativa vs Indica vs Ruderalis

There are some differences between Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis that are visually noticeable. There are two main species of medicinal cannabis (sativa and indica). There are also many cross breed hybrids making the list extremely extensive with their own unique benefits and the list continues to grow. You can get strains that are sativa-dominant or indica-dominant, but I will just list the main effect of the main two.

Cannabis sativa have less chlorophyll than indica. It has a higher THC content to CBD ratio and offers a much more energetic type of mood. Sativa is used most commonly to elevate a depressed mood. Generally speaking the sativa plant is the taller and lankier variety. It can grow 16-19 ft tall (5-6 meters). It is characterized by narrow serrated leaves and loose spear like flower clusters that can be extremely resinous.

Benefits:

  •  Relieves pain and relaxes muscles
  • Relieves migraines and headaches
  • Energizes and stimulates
  • Positive, uplifting, cerebral effect
  • Fights depression
  • Boost appetite
  • Reduces nausea
  • Acts as an expectorant (a medicine that promotes the secretion of sputum by the air passages, used esp. to treat coughs).

    Effects:

      • Best for daytime use
      • Supports immune system
      • Increases focus and creativity

Cannabis indica  has a higher cannabidiol (CBD) content to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) ratio and induces a more relaxing mood. This is a treatment for anxiety, pain, tremors and many more applications. Indica is most commonly used to induce appetite. Indica plants are normally shorter and stockier plants, reaching 3-6 ft (1-2 meters).

Benefits:

  • Reduces pain and relaxes muscles
  • Relieves migraines and headaches
  • Boost appetite
  • Aids sleep
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Relieves spasms, reduces seizures
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Reduces intraocular pressure (inside the eye)
  • Bronchodilator  (inhalation for the alleviation of asthma).
  • Acts as an expectorant (a medicine that promotes the secretion of sputum by the air passages, used esp. to treat coughs).

    Effects:

        • Best for night time use
        • Better for anxiety than depression
        • Relaxation, pain relief and sedation

As you can see there is a third, Cannabis ruderalis, but it doesn’t have the potent psychoactive compounds found in it like sativa/indica, which is why most people dismiss it. Ruderalis grows up in the extreme cold parts of Canada Northern Europe and Northern Russia. In these areas where it is cold most of the year with limited sun light this species adapted to its environment. Adapting an “automatic” growing cycle once the seeds germinate the plant immediately starts to take off. The plant grows, flowers and goes to seed in just 10 weeks from the short summers.

Then growers had the great idea of combining the ruderalis with the other sativa or indica so it will have the potent compounds it was missing. The new breed was able to grow in less light, grow conditions and be mature at only 3 ft (1 meter) tall. As you could imagine the first generations of this new breed had some issues with inconsistent growth, hermaphrodite (could ruin the whole crop by pollinating the rest of the female flowers) and lack of potency, until they created the worked them out.
